Meridian View Center 地王大厦– Shenzhen, China

In the early evening around 6 pm, we set off from Splendid China Folk Village to go to our dream place, Di Wang Da Sha. Joe and I wanted to know what kind of place it is and how it looks like because we did not want to see it only in the movie. Honestly, we had no idea where the building was, so we had to ask for directions. We wanted to find if the building was real, not only a movie fantasy. I was excited to know that the building was real. We took the MTR to go to the tower. After that, we walked for about 10 minutes from the MTR exit. Then, we found it. O thank God. But our stomach was so hungry that we had to have dinner first, a quick one of course because the entrance to the tower would be closed at 11 pm. We hurriedly took the elevator to go to the administration desk. We were very surprised to know that the admission fee was RMB 80 per person. But because we did not want to waste the chance to see the real Di Wang Da Sha, we paid the money. We were then guided by some lady officers to the highest level of the building, the 69th floor. Once the elevator's door was opened, we were too surprised because the real Di Wang Da Sha was not like what we saw in the movie. It was far from our imagination and expectation.

Di Wang Da Sha or known as Shun Qing Square stands 384 meters and is the highest landmark in Shenzhen and one of the highest sightseeing spots in Asia. The building is the icon of Shenzhen and the window of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. It offers visitors the opportunity to view Shenzhen and Hong Kong from its 69th floor. The building was completed in 1996 and opened to public on September 28, 1999. As the first high-rise theme sightseeing and entertainment scenic spot in Asia, the building has attracted nearly three million visitors since its first opening. From 1996 to 1997, the tower was the highest building in China before Guangzhou’s CITIC Plaza was completed. Currently, it is the fourth tallest building in China and the ninth worldwide. Visitors need only less than one minute to reach the 69th floor. The floor itself is a round room that offers a 360° view of the city. The place was very tranquil. I guess the only visitors were us. We explored the whole room until we got back to the very same place where we started. Then I realized it was a circle-shaped room.

P1010912Upon arriving at the Meridian View Center, do not miss the chance to have a bird’s eye view of Shenzhen and Hong Kong through the telescopes on the observation desk. With this, you can see many spectacular sights of such a young city like Shenzhen that has vigor and vitality beyond imagination. I was trying to see the city through the telescope but I did not know how to use it properly… haha....

P1010896The view of Shenzhen city at night with glittering lights taken from the Meridian View Center. I believe the view at daylight would be much clearer than at night. And some people say it is best to view the city during clear days because you can see the places more clearly. But I personally think the daylight views have different sides of beauty than the night ones.

P1010897Inside the floor, there is a coffee house called Lan Gui Fang. We ordered a coconut pudding and it was tasty. The spot is a perfect place for couple to have a romantic dinner while enjoying the breathtaking view of the city at night.

P1010904The floor also displays wax statues of the President of China, Mao Ze Dong, sitting on a chair while talking with the first female Prime Minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher with the view of Tian An Men Square and Central Hong Kong Island as the background. However, the statues look obviously fake compared to the ones in Hong Kong Madam Tussaud.

P1010908The national flag of China is also displayed.

P1010921Since we could not take the real picture of the Meridian View Center due to its gigantic height, we could only take picture with the picture of the tower. Hahaha….

P1010923There is also the miniature of the Meridian View Center and other buildings surrounding it.

P1010932There is also a line of shops selling Shenzhen souvenirs and postcards but the stalls were already closed when we got there.

P1010936This is the education center where visitors are informed about the development of Shenzhen from small fishing village into a metropolitan city.

We quite regretted we had to pay for such an expensive ticket to go to such a plain and boring place. Indeed, if you visit the site to have a romantic dinner with your spouse, it is a very beautiful place because you can see the whole Shenzhen from it. Unless for that purpose, the site does not offer interesting attractions. At first, I thought it would be like a place where we could see the whole Shenzhen in an open space. But there was no open space. Though I was disappointed, at least I have known what kind of place it is and my curiosity was paid. Less than one hour after taking pictures, we decided to go home. It was already 11 pm and we were all exhausted after the whole journey.
