Western Han Nanyue King's Tomb Museum 西汉南越王博物馆 – Guangzhou, China

Are you a museum traveler? I am, and you might consider me a bit awkward since unlike girls in general, I prefer going to museums instead of malls. Yes, indeed my hobby is a little bit extraordinary.. haha.. Every time I asked my friends to visit a museum, they would refuse with various excuses. They were not interested to go there for they regarded museum as a boring place where there are only ancient artifacts and no entertainment at all (oopps… correct me if I’m wrong guys.. hehe). Is it 100% true? I don’t think so. Although museums display ancient things, they offer another side of entertainment to those who have special taste for history and culture. It is the place where you could see directly ancient stuff and catch a glimpse of past history.
In summer 2009, I took my mom and my brother to visit a museum since I believe they were the only people willing to accompany to visit “museum”.. haha.. That museum did not look strange to me since I had passed it several times whenever I took public bus to go to Guihuagang, the wholesale center of bags. Each time I passed it, I wondered what that red building really was. After I searched on the map, I found out that that red building is actually a museum called the Western Han Dynasty Nanyue King Museum. Mmh.. what a long name for a museum.. The admission fee to the museum was only 12 Yuan.

Independence Monument – Phnom Penh, Cambodia

On the second day in Phnom Penh, we together with our Cambodian friends took a city tour by tuk-tuk. The easiest transportation tourists could take to travel short-distance from one place to another in Cambodia is tuk-tuk because of its practicality and cheap price. We rented a tuk-tuk for US$ 20 for one whole day tour. The driver could speak some English and had destinations map to offer to us. I asked him to take us to the Independence Monument in the center of the city.
Known as Vimean Akareach in Khmer language, the Independence Monument was constructed in 1958 to celebrate Cambodia’s freedom from French colonialism on 9 November 1953. King Norodom Sihanouk successfully forced the French empire to grant Cambodia total independence without shedding any single drop of blood. This has become his highest achievement during his rule that he was rewarded the title “the Father of Independence.” Standing majestically at the heart of the capital on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard, this reddish brown lotus-shaped edifice was a masterpiece of the famous and influential Cambodian modern architect Vann Molyvann. He is the father of the New Khmer Architecture who also designed the Olympic Stadium and many other buildings in Phnom Penh during the 1960s – 1970s. Modeled after the central tower of the famous Cambodian world heritage Angkor Wat, the monument is 20 meters high and has five tiers decorated with 100 Nagas, a mythical multi-headed cobra in Khmer culture. Inaugurated on 9 November 1962, the monument was erected by the father of King Sihanouk, King Norodom Suramarit. Besides symbolizing as an independence memorial, the monument also serves to commemorate Cambodian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the independence. For this reason, this monument is also referred to Victory Monument.

Phsar Reatrey (Night Market) – Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Prior to our trip to Cambodia, I suddenly had a gastric attack and felt extremely bad. I was staying in my cousin’s room for one night upon our arrival to Medan, Indonesia, after the flight from Vietnam. That night I was struggling with my stomachache. I was wriggling on my bed just like a worm trying to stand against that pain. The next morning, I still had this nausea and thought I would give up my trip to Cambodia. I was in dilemma since we had bought the flight tickets with a quite high price. But praise the Lord, finally I threw up and felt much better and we headed to Cambodia to continue our honeymoon trip.
Going to Cambodia was a struggle for me because we almost cancelled our trip. Though the country is an infamous honeymoon destination among newly weds, we were curious about it. We do not speak any Cambodian nor knew much about the country. Apart from the knowledge that it is a poor and less developed country, we had no idea of what it really looks like. Fortunately, my husband has a friend who has been working there for years and he asked for his help. His friend then asked his subordinate to accompany us during our stay there. We flew by Malaysia Airlines and arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport. We found striking differences between Vietnam and Cambodia. The texture of the land was totally different. In Vietnam, the land was lush and green while in Cambodia it was dry and arid. I had some doubt in my heart about the country. The airport was also smaller and less modern than the one in Vietnam.

Mekong River Tour – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Another tourist attraction outside Ho Chi Minh City is Mekong River, which is the lifeblood of the country as it is the source of water that runs throughout Vietnam. Covering an area of 15,000 square miles, Mekong Delta is the place where the Mekong River ends its journey from the Tibetan plateau to complete its route to the South China Sea. The area around the delta is often referred to as the “rice bowl” of Vietnam because of its lush, tropical and fertile lands that produce a very high amount of rice crop production. Exploring the river and the islands is a relaxing activity because it is a suitable place to retreat from the hustle of the city. Visiting the site also provides insight into local life. Together with our friend’s family, we joined a local tour to explore the river. We set off early morning to gather at the meeting point. Then, we got into the bus and departed for My Tho. The journey took only two hours. As soon as we arrived there, we boarded a motorized boat along the river to go to Phoenix Island where we would observe coconut candy workshop and visit bee and honey farms.
