Haizhu Bridge 海珠桥 – Guangzhou, China

Where would you go when you feel depressed and have no more room to express your anger, disappointment and rage? There is a place in Guangzhou you might want to visit if you are in that kind of situation; it is called Haizhu bridge. The bridge itself is just an ordinary bridge located in Haizhu square area with a very old history. However, it offers a serene atmosphere for those who wish to retreat from the hectic life and relax for a while.  “If I can’t express my sadness, I will go to a quiet place like this bridge and shout as loudly as I could”, said one of my friends who went with me. That could be one of her ways to release life’s burden. Indeed people have their own unique ways to relieve themselves. I personally would turn to prayer as a getaway from my problems.
That night I did not plan to go out. However, my friend urged me to accompany her to visit an old bridge located in Haizhu square, called Haizhu bridge. Haizhu bridge was built in 1929 by American companies with total length of 356.67 meters. However, it was bombed by Kuomintang in 1949, and renovated in 1950. Due to the economic development of the country, the bridge was expanded in 1975.

Functioning as a connection between two areas, the bridge is located in the midst of the busy commercial wholesale trading center, Haizhu square. There you could find hundreds of stalls and shops selling various things including accessories, toys, shoes, dried foods, stationaries, and many other stuff. Everyday old people gather together to play chess, practice taichi, dance, play badminton and do other activities. Chinese people are very concerned with their health especially when they get older. For them, regular exercises can help them live longer. No wonder, a sixty-year old Chinese lady can still actively travel by bus and walk fast.
The bridge is also a perfect place for couple to have a romantic time together. Watching the sun sets from the bridge might be one of the most romantic moments you could ever spend with your beloved one. Under the light shine and the quietness of the river water, it is indeed an ideal place for couples to just stroll along the bridge talking to each other more personally. In fact, the area nearby is lined up with a series of shops, bars and cafes with dimmed light creating even more romantic situation. Along the sideway of the bridge, there are also photographers offering their service to take photographs with the bridge and the water as the background.

The night view at the bridge is very beautiful with colorful lights and tranquil atmosphere, making it one of the most visited spots by couples who seek to have a romantic experience.

In the evening, large ships usually travel along the Pearl River crossing the bridge. Inside the ship, you could enjoy a romantic dinner accompanied by music, dance and beautiful night city view.

Me and my Vietnamese friend. I haven’t seen her for over than one year. I miss her.

I guess Haizhu bridge is a good place to have a personal reflection for though it is not a totally quiet place, the night view and the quiet water can still create a peaceful atmosphere in our hearts and leave a personal impression.
