Guangzhou Zoological Garden 广州动物园 – Guangzhou, China

Guangzhou zoological garden is less famous than Chimelong zoo because it covers smaller area and has fewer animals on display. Personally I do not really like the zoo for it is not well organized compared to Chimelong zoo. I and my brother decided to go there on our own for we were curious to know what the zoo was like. Anyway, it is stated in the tourist map. When we reached the entrance and queued in front of the ticket counter, I was not impressed with the service of the ticket clerk for they did not give clear information about the zoo and the animal performances. Yes, indeed the admission fee is much cheaper than the one in Chimelong. It only costs 20 Yuan compared to Chimelong that costs around 100 Yuan. In China, price really affects quality. Yi fen qian yi fen huo…

Constructed in 1958, Guangzhou zoo occupying an area of 430,000 square meters displays various animals. Those animals were put into different groups according to their kind, for example lions, tigers, monkeys, birds, and many others. As one of the largest zoos in China, it attracts over than 2.5 million visitors annually. Through 50 years of development, the zoo has successfully become a popular tourist attraction and gained reputation as the AAAA National Tourist Attraction by China National Tourist Attraction Quality Evaluation Committee. The zoo does not only serve as an animal exhibition and research center, but also as an amusement park. It consists of bird’s paradise, animal square, goldfish garden, reptiles & amphibies, butterfly garden, monkey hill, bear hill, lion hill, tiger hill, ocean world, animal performance, amusement park, children’s jungle, and science corridor. In the animal square, visitors can take pictures with their favorite animal stars. The zoo houses more than 400 domestic and overseas species, with almost 5000 animals raised. Besides that, there are also verdant flowers and green plantations that create a relaxing atmosphere for visitors. Unfortunately, they were not well-maintained thus they looked somewhat pale. The zoo also holds animal performances like lion, tiger, bear, monkey, goats, dogs and horses. All of them are well-trained animals and show wonderful performance under the trainers’ command. Sadly, I did not watch any of the performances since I missed the schedule.

Guangzhou zoological garden (27) The tigers are put in jail instead of in an open space. This is what makes this zoo is less interesting and less special than Chimelong zoo.

Guangzhou zoological garden (33) The black monkey looks depressed and unhealthy. This shows that the zoo is not taking care of the animals well enough.

Another major attraction site in the zoo is the Ocean World. The Ocean World shows a variety of marine life in the underwater tunnel and was built in 1998 to serve as a large-scale and multi-functional scientific and high-tech exhibition hall with entertainment, scientific research and education purposes. Covering an area of 13,000 square meters and through years of development, the Ocean World has now become the National Popular Science Education Base, Guangdong Educational Base for Popular Marine Science and Guangdong Youths Educational Base for Popular Science. There are also performances held inside; among them are Ocean Theater, Mermaid Show, and Shark Feeding Show.

Guangzhou zoological garden (58) Wow.. what a brave man the person in the picture is. A diver is swimming safely in the midst of wild sharks. Why did not the sharks eat him? Of all the performances held inside the Ocean World, I only managed to watch this Shark Feeding Show.

Guangzhou zoological garden (66) Long time ago, there was Noah’s Ark, this time we have penguins’ ark. They also have the right to build an ark to save themselves from global warming right? haha..

Guangzhou zoological garden (73) Fortunately, this is not a real shark’s open mouth. Otherwise, I will not be writing this article.. hehe..

Guangzhou zoological garden (81) These white dolphins are not only cute but they are also very smart. I and my brother watched their performance and it was very stunning. The dolphins could follow the instructors’ commands. They could sing, count and do many other fun things. I’m sure you would love to meet them. =D

Guangzhou zoological garden (96) Dolphins have always been used as the symbol of ocean world because they are considered to be the most friendly sea creatures. It is such a pity that now they are in extinction because of the foolish hunting effort of human beings. We have to save them.

Butterfly garden is situated in the northeast corner of the zoo with a total area of 1,250 square meters. It is made up of three major parts: walk-in butterfly garden, Specimen Exhibition and Life of Butterfly Exhibition. We actually went to the butterfly garden as our last visit before we walked out. However, since the view inside the garden was not impressive, we just caught a glimpse of it and decided to end our journey on that day.
If you have a chance to visit Guangzhou, I would recommend you to visit Chimelong zoo at the first place. Once you have visited Chimelong zoo, you will see the clear differences between the two zoos. In the end, you would be able to decide which zoo that gives you best impression. Anyway, if you are truly an animal lover, you would love to go to both places.
