Lotus Hill Park 莲花山公园 – Shenzhen, China

On my second day in Shenzhen after we visited the Honey Lake Resort, Farida and I continued our exploration of the city to a new site called Lotus Hill Park or also referred to as Lian Hua Shan Park. We knew the site from the tourist map. However, we did not understand how to reach there by MTR or bus so we took a cab. The cab fee from the Honey Lake Resort to the park cost around RMB 45, quite expensive compared to cab fee in Guangzhou. The admission to the park is free so everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of it.
As I strolled around the park, I did not really find something special there and I felt more like walking than climbing the mountain. As far as my eyes could see, there were only trees, green plantations, and bushes. Maybe it was because I visited the park in the winter. I just noticed that the best time to visit it is summer when hundreds of phoenix flowers come to their full bloom adorning the park with red cloak. Some also say that it is best to visit the park in the late afternoon and early evening.

The Lotus Hill Park is one of the best public parks in China at the heart of the big city. It is actually the foot of the Lotus Mountain that is situated at the central part of Futian, Shenzhen. The mountain is neither grand nor steep for it stands only 106 meters above the sea level. The park is the largest green space in the central city area and was listed as the city’s top 8 tourism and cultural areas in June 28, 2004. Occupying an area of 166 hectares, the park has some tourist spots including kite flying area, the Guan Shan Yue Museum, boating lake, teahouse, walking trails, hill and monumental statue of Deng Xiao Ping, the Father of Shenzhen. It was built in October 10, 1992 and opened in June 21, 1997. Its management is handled directly by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government Office of the leadership of city management.

IMG_0334Look at how tranquil the lake is. The lake provides a real sense of escape from the city.

Since the park’s area is quite big and our time was limited, we did not visit the other spots like the kite flying area, the Guang Shan Yue Art Museum and the monument of Deng Xiao Ping. However, based on what I read, the Guang Shan Yue museum exhibits nearly 1,800 pieces of artworks and the bronze statue of Deng Xiao Ping was built in memory of the pre-chairman Deng Xiao Ping who inspired the opening of Shenzhen as the Special Economic Zone. The statue stands six meters and weighs seven tons. Erected on the Chinese National Day in 2000, the statue portrays this inspiring leader in a confident walking position and benevolent eyes looking over the city he inspired.
Overall, the park left no special impression to me. However, if you want to add more color to your travel experience, a stopover to the park will not hurt. But remember to visit it during summer when the park is at its best view. Then you will be surprised at how the tranquil landscape greets you with its natural beauty and modesty.
