Repulse Bay 浅水湾 – Hong Kong, China

Are you a beach person? I am not, but I love natural views. Visiting a beach in summer is not a good idea for me because I get tanned easily and I hate being tanned. But, thank God, when I visited one of the most famous beaches in Hong Kong, the Repulse Bay, the weather was friendly. The sun was shining softly. Continuing our Big Bus Tour, we stopped at the Repulse Bay. The beach is a beautiful white-sand beach with pristine water and tranquil atmosphere.
The bus stopped at the bus stop and we needed to take staircases to go down to the beach. It was very beautiful. The beach was not too full with people. There were only a few visitors at that time. Some were lying on the beach enjoying the sun bathing, while others were swimming. The view there is like the beach in Shen Zhen, Xiao Mei Sha, the one I visited once. The beach is a perfect place to enjoy nature in the midst of a big city like Hong Kong.

Repulse bay or “Shallow Water Bay” is one of the most popular beaches in Hong Kong. There are two theories that explain how the beach retains its present name. The first theory says that in the old days, the beach was the haven of Chinese pirates who always intended to plunder the foreign merchant ships. In 1841, the British army repulsed the Chinese pirates. Since then, the beach was named “Repulse Bay”. Another version mentions that the beach was named after the HMS repulse, a British ship that was once stationed there. This spectacular beach offers visitors good sanity and comfort through its public facilities like bathrooms, showers, light refreshment kiosk, a playground, barbeque grills and a beach volleyball area. This makes the beach a pleasant place to visit. It is flooded with visitors during summer and weekends. They come to the beach to enjoy the beauty of the fresh white sand, clear sparkling water, calm tide and gentle wave. Since the beach is located on the southern coast of Hong Kong island, it is saved from the severe water pollution from the Pearl river in Guangdong province that has affected many other beaches including the ones in Hong Kong. The beach is easily accessible by bus from the Central. It only takes you around 20 minutes to reach there. If you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of a city’s life, the beach is the ideal getaway.

The beach is a luxurious area for an array of leisure and aquatic activities that is open to public for free. The most popular activities are swimming and sunbathing. While swimming, you do not need to worry about shark attacks and other sea animals because the beach is equipped with shark prevention nets and floating platforms. Lifeguards are also available from March until November. In the summer, the water temperature is perfect for sun bathing. Besides the two main activities, you can also enjoy your time by playing thrilling water sports or savoring delicious seafood.
The beach is a fine harbor for small boats because it has narrow inlet. Almost similar to Australia’s Gold Coast, it is surrounded with luxurious houses, romantic tea houses, barbeque sites, up-scale restaurants and Western-style tall buildings. It also boasts to have some of the best restaurants in Hong Kong; one of them is the Verandah, a popular restaurant among locals and tourists that serves Western-style cuisine. Because of its popularity, you have to make reservations in advance. The natural beauty of the Repulse Bay and the extravagance of the buildings circling it have raised the property value in this area making it among the highest in Hong Kong. Therefore, it is mostly inhabited by the wealthy.

My boyfriend and I at the Repulse Bay. The beach is also a perfect place for honeymooners or the newly weds. It indeed has romantic atmosphere. In the future, I might want to visit it again, but this time with my husband for a sweet romantic honeymoon. hahaha…

I did not swim there but just took some pictures to keep as memory. We did not spend much time exploring the beach because it was almost the time for the next bus to come and pick us up. So we got ready at the bus station and waited for the bus there. It was going to rain soon, and fortunately the bus arrived and picked us up. We then headed back to the Central.
