Triple “C”s to compete in the 21st century

Honestly, there are actually no exact formulas to be adaptive and responsive to the big challenges and vast changes of the 21st century. This is not something like the “one+one=two” principle. As time goes by, changes will soon take place and we must adapt and change. If we do not, we will be swept away just like Darwin's theory of evolution. Wealth solely is not a guarantee to survive in this era for it is temporary; rather we should cling to long-lasting and priceless qualities that can be applied by people of all ages and backgrounds, the principles of 3 C's (Curiosity, Creativity and Character).

Curiosity – Learn something new

“When we stop searching, we stop learning; and when we stop learning we stop growing” emphasizes the importance of curiosity in learning all things. Curiosity is not an exclusive feeling for certain people but rather a skill needs to be sharpened through each time we read books, watch news, do research and practice. When we start doing all these, we are activating the curiosity within us. To adapt with changes of this globalization era, we must learn to be curious at all times. We must not stop learning new things. Do not easily feel satisfied with what we have and achieve, for if we do, other people can quickly take over our position. Always update and improve ourselves with new information and skills to have big pictures of what new strategies we can apply. Curiosity adds to our knowledge and improves our personal skills. When we know more, we will create more.

Creativity – Invent something new

Curiosity plus creativity will be a powerful capital to survive in the 21st century. Being creative means thinking outside the box, not following the crowds. Use our knowledge to invent new things that differentiate us from other people. Some companies went bankrupt because they stopped inventing new products or strategies. Their shrewd rivals detected this weakness and overthrew the left-behind companies. So, be creative in finding new places, products, networkings and strategies.
“Pursue knowledge to China” is a famous Indonesian proverb saying a lot of of things we can learn from this large country with more than 5000 years history. The world is currently staring at China for China has a great possibility to replace the Unites States as the most powerful country in the world. Creativity also refers to seeing the possible opportunities in the future. Find something new, for example start learning Chinese and doing business with Chinese people. Do not limit ourselves by following what most people are doing now. Seek new opportunities, dare to take risk and grab the opportunities before anyone else precedes us.

Character – Change into someone new

The global financial crisis in 2008 brought severe damages to many European countries. Many companies went bankrupt and some people committed suicide as a “getaway” from the financial pressures. In facing challenges of this era, do not let ourselves be overcome by the conditions, but overcome them with positive response. A positive response can change the worst condition into the best one. Possess good character that encompasses honesty, positive mind and attitude, integrity, perseverance, persistence, humility, patience, etc.. In his book, John Maxwell, a great motivator, stated that knowledge (talent) brings us to the top but character sustains us. So, let's start developing good character within us

In a nutshell, all of us can adapt with the rapid changes of the 21st century as long as we never stop renewing ourselves.
