Shenzhen is well known for its industries and economic development. Due to the strong influence from its neighbor, Hong Kong, the city ranks the third place of the three most developed cities in China after Shanghai and Guangzhou. As the Special Economic Zone of China, Shenzhen now has grown into a thriving big city with many skyscrapers. It is also an industrial city where countless of items are manufactured here. Besides that, it also has some fabulous theme parks and tourist attractions which one of them is Window of the World.
In January 2010, I visited Window of the World with my friend Farida. We took express train from Guangzhou. The journey lasted for two hours. The express train that connects Guangzhou-Shenzhen is a clean and air-conditioned train with cozy seats. Two hours sitting inside the train were only a short time. We then got off the train and took the MTR to go to the hotel located near the famous Window of the World. After looking for some directions, we finally found the hotel. I forgot the name but it was quite cheap, only 100 RMB per night. Though the hotel was not as clean as a five-star hotel, we found it quite comfortable. After putting down our baggage, we quickly went to the Window of the World. It was winter and there were not many people. The ticket cost around 140 RMB per person.
I was impressed at the beautiful park in front of the entrance of Window of the World. The open courtyard was very lovely and colorful with many flowers of various shapes and waterfall decorating it. There were also giant cans and oversized things. I felt like being in a fairy tale world. I entered the park excitedly despite the cold weather outside.
Stretching over an area of 48 hectares in the western part of Shenzhen, Window of the World stands out as a replica park that houses over 130 miniatures of world’s most famous tourist attractions, historical places and natural wonders. It is open daily from 9 am to 11.30 pm. All the masterpieces displayed here are built at ratios 1:1, 1:5 or 1:15. Constructed in June 18, 1994 near the Splendid of China and China Folk Culture Village, the park stands as one of the most prominent theme parks in Shenzhen. Every year, the park holds the Cherry Festival and the Indian Cultural Week. During the Cherry Festival, visitors can stroll in the cherry garden of Japan while sipping a cup of tea.
Based on the world geographical position and category of scenes, Window of the World is divided into eight scenic areas: the World Square, the Area of Asia, the Area of Oceania, the Area of Europe, the Area of Africa, the Area of America, the Sculpture Park, and the International Street. Let’s explore the sections.
It was winter in January and the weather outside was freezing. The decorations at the open courtyard were still about Christmas. I really like it!!!
The World Square
The Glass Pyramid of Louvre, France stands sentinel at the Window of the World’s MTR exit. This picture is taken when I visited Shenzhen in summer 2009.
The World Square is surrounded with 108 steles of different styles and a relief sculpture wall over an area of nearly 2,000 square meters.
The World Square is the activity center of the park and it can accommodate up to 10,000 visitors. In the middle of the square stands a gorgeous stage where artists from all over the world perform musical and dancing attractions together. This spectacular entertainment show starts at 7.30 pm every day. On Saturdays and Sundays, fireworks show are also played here before the closing time at 10 pm.
The Area of Asia
The Area of Oceania
The Area of Europe
The Area of Africa
The Area of America
Unfortunately, when we arrived in the area of America, the day was already getting darker so the pictures taken were not really good.
I regretted that we did not have enough time to take the pictures of all replicas in the Area of America because our cameras were running out of battery and the day was already dark. We also did not have the chance to record the other two sections, the Sculpture Park and the International Street. That was disappointing. But at least we had explored most parts. After exploring the sections, we had dinner which was very expensive while waiting for the night spectacular show. We watched the show at the world square while struggling with the night cold. Actually I did not really remember the whole scene of the show, but I had a good impression about it. It was such a wonderful performance with fabulous lighting and dancing. If you want to visit Window of the World, you need the whole day to explore all the sections. The site is indeed a must place to see if you drop by in Shenzhen.
